josh praus has been involved in san francisco’s bay area scene for the last two decades. a prolific collector and player of records, what we tellin’ them marks his first public outing as a producer. as debuts go, it’s pretty darn impressive.
praus has been working hard in the studio over the last three years, creating tracks that draw influence from a wide range of styles and artists. he cites “downtempo, disco, house, italo and techno” as major inspirations, and listeners may hear elements from all of these disparate styles on this assured, confident ep.

it’s time to feel the energy, japanese master soichi terada (far east recording, rush hour) flies over the 90s videogames scenario with his dancing shoes for a dreamy computer voyage. on the other side two freaky reinterpretations of terada’s track by italian talent whodamanny from the mystic jungle tribe (early sounds recordings, periodica records), a soccio-style disco single and a sci-fi jazz exploration. what else?

it all began with a licensing inquiry for a sister funk cut which we wanted to include on our deep funk comp titled “feeling nice vol. 3”. after the deal was completed producer fred forsh mentioned that the backing band of nadine brown’s masterpiece “leave me alone” had released a 45 themselves under their name teakwood. after mr. forsh played us both sides we knew that this 45 would have to be re-issued. what was about to follow nobody of us ever expected. mr. forsh told us that teakwood recorded almost a dozen of songs which were supposed to be released on a full length album. for unspecified reasons the album was never released and it remained in the can for almost 40 years. finally, we are very proud to announce the release of teakwood’s debut album “a distant star” in early 2017. until then you have to be content with this 45 rpm single re-issue.

WHAT AM I GONNA DO FOR FUN - ORIG / TOLOUSE LOW TRAX VERSION
12 Inch
17.10.16
this is an official reissue of what am i gonna do for fun by the band pitch (1982 - new york city). this release also includes a fantastic remix or rework by tolouse low trax (toresch, salon des amateurs, düsseldorf). a few words from stuart shape, the producer: feels like it was done by another person. i remember getting the serge synthetiser to stay in tune was always a problem. we were fascinated with the new sampling that were just coming out, and kind of got carried away on the vocals. not sure what i was thinking about with the lyrics, guess maybe trying to figure out what i was supposed to be doing when i wasnt working or playing music unfortunately no other finished tracks from that era have survived. they recorded a lot, but finished and saved very little.
NOTHING WITHOUT YOU EP

03.10.16
unlucky 013? ha! this one’s a pearler. multi talented producer red rack’em climbs up the fertile n s y d e spirit tree for this glowing summer release in the form of the ‘nothing without you’ ep. a mutation from the same skunky-soul strain of n s y d e 005 by skymark / lady blacktronika. the title cut is a result of a red rack’em tour through the south pacific, connecting with inkswell and fam. what was meant to be a rack’em / inkswell track instead ended up with australian vocalist, now berlin diamond in the rough: misumami liberally sprinkling her magic throughout. with a proposed subject matter based around missing loved ones while apart, misumami weaves an enchanting story of longing, and matters of the heart, through signature sleek, clever, floor ready rack’em production. flip for ‘love beat’ and here we get red rack’em- the funky technician fanboy, dusty fingered native tongue devotee, and closet jazz dancer. the loose, bumping drum programming and sculpted, cubist jazz sampling (inna heavy mandalorian funk fashion) weld this nocturnal seduction dance together. this is a late night groover, an eyes closed on the dance floor vibration. both sides are modern, vital, considered house music, where the problems of the world dissolve in a heads down- vibes up situation. mastered by pole at scapemastering so you know it’s gonna bang...

the frightnrs escort daptone into the world of long-playing reggae with both the sweetest and the roughest record of the decade. crafted under the meticulous eye of black-belt reggae mastermind/producer victor axelrod (aka ticklah), nothing more to say is a rocksteady masterpiece the likes of which has not reared it s head since the golden era of studio one. however, you ll find no imitation here - none of the faux-jamaican cliches of lesser reggae bands. like all things daptone, this record is above all soulful and honest.

GALEGOS BAR / THE RITUAL
12 Inch
29.08.16
what ever not is the variegated music outlet from experienced dodi palese and dan mela, italian djs and producers supporting, selling, playing and releasing instrumental and dance music for two decades. what ever not tenth record, ‘galegos bar / the ritual’, sees a split release signed by dan mela and marco erroi. label co-founder dan mela inaugurates a new moniker ‘man dela’ for ‘the ritual’ - the original track gets remixed by anton zap, with whom mela already collaborated for a digital release on his own ethereal sound. flipping on the other side, marco erroi, head of common series ltd, continues his production career with ‘xxxv gold fingers’ for the ‘galegos bar’ side – one of the many different aliases he personifies - also contributing by realizing the artwork. ‘galegos bar / the ritual’ offers two sides of the same coin and we can have both things with one stroke. the common denominator is the ethnical ritual. it is fully expressed in the man dela side with deep and hypnotic ride out turned upside down by anton zap with a dynamic electronic waltz. the same item, however, is magically hidden in the xxxv gold fingers side, where we can find it in the form of drink beer and play cards just like in most terrible bars in south of italy.

- catapulted into the public consciousness by beth ditto, kiddy smile seeks to spread the retro love in his beats - all of which he produces, sings and sometimes even raps over himself. deeply influenced by the sleazy, lazy feel of 80s and 90s house music and the fabulous legacy of the ballroom scene, he has performed live alongside the likes of hercules & love affair and the gossip. through his own music and performances, kiddy has kept the nostalgic sounds of the dancefloor very much alivebio : via his extravagant persona and good music, the parisian producer kiddy smile gets great coverage in the music world, but also fashion (he s the sound designer for balmain, and spins for the like of alexander wang, balenciaga shows etc.) and queer community.it s impossible to dissociate his music with what he represents today in the gay and voguing community and many filmed / photographed features celebrating diversity have highlighted kiddy smile in them.

guitarist rolando bruno hails from buenos aires and got his start playing a raw brand of garage and punk with his band los peyotes. a few years back he took a step into the not-so-distant world of afro-peruvian psicodelico that s had a recent renaissance throughout south america. what made his early forays into a more tropical branch of fuzz so unique was his accompanying band-or lack thereof. armed with an electric guitar and self-produced and recorded backing tracks, rolando bruno and his orquesta midi jet-setted across europe and japan as a mad scientist one-man band, laying down a relentless style of chicha classica gone loopy that earned him several tours and a full-length album with the swiss imprint, voodoo rhythm. originally recorded in 2011 and now remastered and presented by names you can trust on vinyl for the first time, these two tracks are a glimpse into rolandos prolific electric madness and a lysergic-laced pointer towards things to come from the talented six-stringer.

in this offering by the berlin-based and made in the middle east label disco halal, we urge you to meet nadav spiegel, better known as autarkic. autarkic is a self-sufficient artist and live virtuoso, he is the first member of the disco halal family which will be releasing his music in spring 2016. “can you pass the knife?” is about the struggle being stucked in a gap between longing to his homeland and what it could have been like and a heavy criticism on what it actually became. it will be a mini-lp containing 6 mesmerizing songs, “asi keta g”, “solo gun”, “watch out”, “the misorientation of autarkic”, “ufo (space version)” and “tender lies”. that might sound like only a combination of random words now, but after being heard, these songs will help you to enter the embodiment of autarkic and allow you to save a piece of his soul on your shelf. shimmering melodies, gibberish language, haunting vocals, extended beat programming and one-take recordings, should mark the beginning of a new disco halal phase. after releasing mainly edits from around the transcultural hemmesphere, the transition to original exquisite music seems to be a necessity.

OPTIMISTIC CHAOS EP

09.03.16
embracing disco, techno and house music in all its declinations, what ever not introduces now british artist reformed society, project started by house producer harsh puri as a consequence of djing and collecting records since 1998, debuting with a four track old school house ep, optimistic chaos coherently fitting with the italian imprint philosophy. ‘hope’ has that solar, yet dusty groove folding distorted rhythmics and joyful pads around an insistent lead dubby pattern and shimmering synths. ‘optimistic chaos’ is again smooth but lightly gloomy, until a pause intoxicates one’s body and mind filling them with inebriating ambients. ‘incognito’ delivers a deep driving atmosphere here, featuring dogged, crisp drums together with minimalist, yet momentary cosmic motives. for the closing cut ‘detracid’, the artist cooks up a brew of acid lines with the usual charming synths and vivid hats, building a light sense of tension fired up by the warm, heady sound scapes. each track is similar to the last, stiffening the musical timbre of the label, confirming the producer’s strong artistic identity as a consequence.

theres a reason kai alces name consistently comes up when the topic is exceptional house music. the ndatl label boss remix of the dangerfeel newbies * what am i here for* takes the soulful number to heights beyond the originals already heady groove. j piccola sings with a perspective thats like bopping through the city, skyscrapers above giving dimension to the groundwork so necessary for love and progression. his vocals match the pace of propelling keyboards by chris irvin and delvynw. saxophone by quinn mason adds an element that in alces distinctive hands becomes a part of all things classic house: deep, melodic, and ultimately, free. thats particularly true of the kzr’s late night mix. it harkens the wee hours with a shuffle, leading keys and pinpoint bass. the piano instrumental puts keys front and center, with a few jazzy chords that recall the hippest, dopest brunch you’ve ever attended. the entire project is very much atlanta-grown, representing its strong, interconnected music and art scene. all the key contributors are based in the city, from alce and the dangerfeel newbies, to acclaimed visual artist radcliffe bailey, who created the album art, and tastemaking graphic artist steve deniro, who designed the album layout. after small promo run in japan the gem gets a full worldwide release with alternate mixes and kai alcés bonus distinctive remix of * swingin with the new jack* previously unavailable
